How Our Hippo Whole House Water Filters Work
To maximize the performance of our whole house systems, we use multiple stages of filtration. Here's how our whole house filters remove contaminants:

Whole House Water Filter FAQs
- What does a whole house water filter do?
- A whole house water filter is installed at a home's main water line to remove contaminants before they go through the house's pipes. By filtering contaminants at the source, a homeowner can get filtered water throughout their home.
- Is Investing in a Whole House Water Filter a Smart Decision?
- A whole house water filter is a highly effective solution for safeguarding your home's plumbing system. It provides comprehensive protection for crucial components like hot water systems, appliances, and tapware cartridges. Moreover, a whole house filter can significantly prolong the life of point-of-use filtration systems, which are typically used to purify drinking water. An added advantage of these filters is their ability to remove impurities such as chlorine not only from your drinking water but also from bathing water, promoting a healthier home environment. While a point-of-use filter system might be tailored to remove a broader range of contaminants, the whole house filter acts as a first line of defense. It ensures that the water reaching these more specialized filters is already pre-treated, which can enhance their efficiency and potentially extend their lifespan. This setup provides a comprehensive approach to water filtration, combining the broad coverage of a whole house system with the precision of point-of-use filters.
- How long do whole house water filters last?
- The lifetime of a whole house system depends on filter capacity and usage, but a general rule you should wash sediment filter with hose every 3 months or whenever flow is restricted and change at 6 months.
Replace the carbon at 6 – 12 months as required.
- Do I need the Hippo or Hippo Max Flow system?
- If you have a small to medium home with up to 2 bathrooms then the Hippo Small will be suitable. However if you have a medium to large home with over 2 bathrooms then the Hippo Max Flow would be more suitable.

Water filtration technology dates back thousands of years and has
evolved dramatically over time. The earliest recorded instance of water
filtration dates back to ancient Egypt, where they used a method
involving boiling water and then passing it through sand and gravel
filters to purify it. Today's modern water filtration systems, however,
are marvels of engineering. They can remove particles as small as a few
microns (a human hair is about 50 microns in diameter) and are capable
of extracting a wide range of contaminants, including bacteria, viruses,
and chemical pollutants, which were unimaginable challenges in ancient
times. This evolution highlights not just advancements in technology,
but also our growing understanding of water contaminants and their
impact on human health. Water filtration is a field where history,
science, and technology converge to continually improve our quality of
life.
